Show Spoiler

a5c7b9f00b Guts is a skilled swordsman who joins forces with a mercenary group named 'The Band of the Hawk', lead by the charismatic Griffith, and fights with themthey battle their way into the royal court.
Guts was brought up by a mercenary group since birth. After killing his guardian in self-defence, he runs away. Years later, he encounters Griffith and The Band of the Hawk. The Hawks fight for the King of Midland, and after winning the 100-year war against the neighbouring Chuda, they become the King's personal guard. However, once they reach the top, things take a turn for the worse.
Berserk (Manga) is not a new series to me, I read a couple of volumes earlier. The darkness of the subject seemed not an interesting study for me. Once my father became very angry, because he caught me with Berserk volumes, I was 15. The same series I've downloaded last week and watched Season 1, complete 25 episodes. I see, Guts' story was started rather simple and had the quality of an epic. The knowledge beyond the nature, the myths, they exist because we do exist in flesh and blood.

Why it captures my attention?

Berserk has an exceptional balance in the story. Each character has his/her unique qualities and not dominates other. Every single mercenary of the Band of the Hawk are characterized like real characters. Griffith, the anti-hero who is dare ambitious and has the charismatic attitude. He borns not very strong but he has all the qualities of a leader. Guts, the mysterious Black Swordsman, not one of the Hawk's, who is superior in power and achievements, and has no fear in his eyes. He becomes the Commander of the Hawk's who can bring thousand of victories alone in the battlefield better knownthe 100 men slayer. The 3rd main character is a women knight, Casca who is a victim of sexual assault in her childhood and desperately chosen her fate to fight. She has purity in her heart and she is completely devoted to Griffith who saves her life several times.

How the story becomes alive?

The story is indeed fantastic, the love triangle between three main characters and the Crimson Behelit, The Egg of the King, that incidentally saves Griffith's life time-after time. Yes it is alive! Things we believe do exist, but supernatural like Zodd the immortal, sometime they too, either in real or in dreams but they do! We all know they do. The same way, the size of human character that is depending on wealth not in our earthly figure!

Griffith's ambition is innocent, at least at the beginning we think so. But the adobe he builds in his mind is erratic, he never forced anyone to join him, except one man, Guts who has changed everything. Griffith's dream reflected in Guts's eyes. Tudor, the most powerful neighbouring country of Midland that was unconquerable for centuries was defeated by only 5000 armies of Band of the Hawks. Such impossible becomes possible because of the leadership of Griffith and the strength of Guts. Zodd the supernatural himself appears to the battlefield to see Guts live.

Casca loves Griffith, her love is all about devotion. She knows Griffith is ambitious, and to fulfill his ambition he flirts people. She knows Guts has the power that Griffith lacks. The day Guts defeated Griffith on a duel to prove he is a freeman and not belongs to anybody without his own will, Casca realizes her blind devotion.

Guts felt love for one woman in the earth, Casca. He dislikes festival, dance, highborn court women, amusement, and lights. He enjoys silent moon at night. An iron hearted man without feelings. In a flashback we see how he learns to live life. A group of mercenaries found a newly born from the corpse of his dead mother. The wife of Gambino, a mercenary, adopts Guts. Years later she died, leaving Gambino to raise Guts. Guts learned to fight alongside the mercenaries even though he is just a child and his sword isbighim. Although Guts loves Gambinoa father, Gambino is cruel and harsh on Guts, believing the child brings the curse and blaming Guts for his wife's death. One night Gambino attacks Guts in a rage and Guts accidentally kills him in defense.

Conclusion

All well that ends well, may be here the writer and illustrator, Kentaro Miura tries to make a difference. Berserk is a dark saga. Above I shared the ideal folk tale is aroused by curiosity. At least people like me will love to know up-to that level. Later the same story reminds me of Dante's Inferno is in compare. But it is not that the end, the saga burns everything into the hell. It could be something else, better. It's not about the cruel rape scene, that is common in many sex by force stories. Indeed the darkness is something beyond the bad dreams, cruel, horrific, devastating, that directly played with the feelings and emotion that people afraid of. May be Griffith's rebirth aftermath is concluded without an explanation. The whole thing is judged just rightly wrong in a completely bad manner.
Dont watch the dubbed version. Get the original japanese with subtitles or you will ruin it.

This was hands down, one of the best animes ever made. And that is despite the fact that it had limited funding and the animation was not the best. The story telling is superbyou follow the lives of a group of mercenaries who rise to every challenge they are hired to do no matter how improbable. It centers on three main characters, a cold and calculating leader (Griffith), his loyal lieutenant (Casca) and the hot blooded warrior (Gutts) who wanted no part of joining them but was indentured to them via a reckless bet. You also get to know a bunch of minor characters who are important to the mercs.

You follow them around for 24 episodes (note that 1st episode is misleading)the commander tries to build his own army and build his own kingdom. But this is not a happy hero show, its a bit more realistic. There is plenty of satisfying fighting but also awkwardness, tragedy, espionage and luck (both good and bad).

In many ways the story makes a great effort to make the show believable and you wont see any clean cut heroes in this one. Yet you still can understand them even when they do wrong. You will run into some demons and magic here and there but it is not the focus of the story which is why I say the 1st episode is very misleading since it makes you think that its a show about the supernatural.

This show is a lot like Game of Thrones and predates GoT by more than a decade. Like GoT it has supernatural elements but they are not really the focus. The focus is on the characters and their struggle and I argue the characters here are much better.

Berserk tells the story of the first years of the main character (Guts)a mercenary and his first meeting with the war. Berserk is based on a Japanese comic series (manga) written by Kentaro Miura. It was first published in 1989 and it's still on going. Those who watched the series since the first episode know that something happened after the end of episode 25, since episode 01 works more like a sequel to episode 25. However in the actual Berserk timeline (following the manga series) there's a lot of story which takes place after episode 25 and before episode 01 and they are only shown in the manga series. In the manga, after chapter 102 (the one where the anime ends), the skull knight (character not shown in the anime series) manages to break into the hell dimension to rescue Guts and Caska. Both were rescued from the eclipse chaos and broght back by skull knight to human world. Guts had lost one arm and managed to replace it with a fake iron arm featuring a canon inside of it and Caska got insane after she was raped by Femto, being unable to speak or to do the more simple tasks that a normal adult could do. After their enormous loss and humiliation both are hunted by demons and evil spirits, until Guts decides to hunt down all the demon forces of the world, starting a dark and bloody journey and leaving Caska behind with Godo and his daughter. Griffith turned into one of the five god hand demons and had his name changed to 'Femto' and started a plan with the other god hands to destroy humanity using the demons and corrupting other people from the human world to turn them to demonswell. He is constantly hunted by Guts in the manga. After being rescued from the prison, Griffith started to develop great envy for Caska since she was the new leader the hawks and he was unable to recover the leadership to concrete his dream since he was unable to speak or even use a sword,he also started to develop a big attraction to her body and enormous guilt when he realized she was way more beautiful and kind to him,he also had lost the chance to have sex with her, he couldn't try it again since he was permanently weak and Caska was in love with Guts. However this wasn't the main reason for why Griffith raped Caska, what really motivated him was the fact that Guts left him behind to start a new life, ignoring everything that Griffith gave him including his love. Actually Griffith started to develop more than feelings of friendship towards Guts in the war against the Tudor and probably expected that Guts would feel the same. Yes, in the end of volume 13 it's shown that she not only got pregnant but also gave birth to a premature baby human-demon hybrid. It was probably a mixture of Guts and Caska DNA plus Femto's essence of evil (his semen). The baby looks more like a small vermin-fetus creature, it vanishes at daylight but it can be seen in the darkness (like caves or during the night), and sometimes it appears to protect Caska from danger and to warn Guts about the demons. During the pre-production of the series the original idea was to adapt the entire berserk manga series from start to finish (even though the manga story was still on going), however, there was not enough budget to make an adaptation of the first manga chapters, so the only way was to try to sum it up in only one episode, which wasn't the pilot that the producers where expecting. During the production, there weren't enough manga chapters to make a second season after the first 25 episodes, so the studio decided to create only one season with an ending connecting the beginning of the series. Even with the series having a good success with its 25 episodes some fans where disappointed with adaptation of the first volumes to the pilot. Berserk is published in the USA by Dark Horse Comics, and since the manga has not been completed they keep publishing every semester. However, if you want to start to read Berserk since the beginning you can read it on www.mangareader.net .
